Deadline:

Boxcopy ARI

Brisbane-based artist Tyza Stewart is taking part in this year’s emerging artist program at Boxcopy with a four week artist residency in the gallery during the month of August. Come along to the closing weekend events from Friday 29 – Sunday 31 August.

Tyza’s practice is a continually evolving self-portrait formed through paintings, digital images and installations. The work deals with the production and perceptions of gendered identity and concurrent social norms. Tyza gives consideration to how our self expression is impacted by systems that regulate bodies and our perceptions of bodies. The practice becomes specifically incoherent when viewed through an understanding of gender as a static binary, so as to encourage critical reflections and discussions surrounding these issues. At Boxcopy, Tyza will experiment with video-based installation and continue an exploration of self-portraiture through digital mediums.

The project Dense Plant Scenes will centre on a video profile of Tyza Stewart’s art practice.  As a dense plant scene painter, Tyza Stewart uses the practice to experiment and think about ways the artist is perceived based on physical presence and the impact this has on both the subjectivity of the artist, and the art practice itself.

You are invited to submit interview questions for Tyza to respond to in the exhibition and/or in personal correspondence. Ask about Tyza’s art practice, life, etc. Ask from the perspective of a journalist, friend, whoever. Send your questions viahttp://denseplantscenes.tumblr.com/ask (anon enabled).

Tyza completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from Queensland College of Art in 2012, has exhibited in group shows at The Hold Art Space, WitchMeat ARI, Griffith University Art Gallery and was included in BEAF 2013. In 2013 Tyza’s solo show Will You Come curated by Joel Mu at 55 Sydenham Rd Marrickville NSW 2204 AU and the publication Tyzatyzatyza were both realised. Tyza is represented by Heiser Gallery, Brisbane.
