THE BODY’S BALANCING ACT
Put simply, our inner ear contains three semi-circular canals at ninety degrees to each other containing hair in glutenous membranes. When we move our head the liquid and hairs move, sending messages to our brain, to adjust our body to motion.
STRUCTURE’S BALANCING ACT
Throughout history and cultural developments, we have invented a multitude of ways to build safe structures, overcoming the pull of gravity: consider post and lintel, brick work, igloos, tripod, pyramids, triangulation, bracing, rounded arch, dome, barrel vault, pointed arch, buttressing, flying buttresses, cantileverage, suspension, tent poles
and guy ropes, steel frame suspension, tensile structures, etc.
THE DRAWING SESSION’S OBJECTIVES
Following discussion of the sculptural qualities of architectural and structural engineering, create non-figurative drawings of our model that apply structural principles to the human form, that is, visually interpret the body’s ability to find balance, defy gravity, and achieve status in asymmetrical positions.
