WHEN : 3rd Aug – 21st Sep
WHERE : Institute of Modern Art
This year’s show features Joseph Breikers, Caitlin Franzmann, Anita Holtsclaw, and Ruth McConchie. They were selected by Leonard and artist and QUT lecturer Grant Stevens. Each receives $5k to help them realise their project, thanks to a Creative Sparks grant from Brisbane City Council and Arts Queensland.
Breikers and Franzmann show first (3 August–21 September 2013), then Holtsclaw and McConchie (7 December 2013–29 March 2014).
Breikers nags at cultural conventions. His Fresh Cut project explores the humble, and humbling, composting pit toilet. His multi-storey long drop takes inspiration from François Rabelais, Jorge Luis Borges, death-metal, and toilet humour.
Franzmann wants us to slow-down and reflect. For Fresh Cut, she has made sound pieces that you don helmets to hear. The pieces inform and alter perceptions of the gallery space. The experience is both social and individual: everyone is wearing a helmet, but may be hearing different things.
