Behind the heritage facade of Metro Arts there is a vibrant laboratory for the development of new work. On the first Friday of the month, Metro Arts is throwing open its doors to give you an insight into the Artists’ world through a range of new projects, and start a dialogue on what you experience to broaden their perspective on how their work might grow.
This glimpse past closed doors is not about polished work. Friday Nights showcase works in development; rough, ready, and full of potential. Step into studios and rehearsals – see the unseen, give feedback on new ideas in development, have a glass of wine with Brisbane’s premier artists. The Foyer Bar will be open to meet and have a drink from 5.30pm – ready for the program to kick off at 6pm.

Takeover#2: Hanako, Caroline Dunphy & Shane Thompson Architects (30 minutes)
6pm, 7pm, 8pm – Basement
Caroline Dunphy collaborates with Shane Thompson Architects in this rumination on Yukio Mishima’s Hanjo, a modern Noh play. The work experiments with digital media, built structure, and live performance to create a truly sensory experience; confronting with a haunting beauty. Friday Night: May will feature fractured excerpts of Hanako, in this work-in-development showing.
Chattel Shelter: Hyssop in the Helter-Skelter, Ruth McConchie
6pm – 9pm – Sue Benner Theatre
Enter and make your way through the space in your own time; Ruth McConchie has intervened in and re-imagined the Sue Benner Theatre; reflecting on theatre etiquette, social rituals and group mentalities as she arranges objects, forms and histories. The installation will be open through the night.
Intimate Immensity: the experience of environment (30 minutes)
6.15pm – Studio
A panel discussion with Lubi Thomas, Ruth McConchie, and Shane Thompson Architects, discussing how the artists use and manipulate space and architecture in their work to create particular experiences for the audience. Facilitated by Metro Arts’ Programming Manager, Kieran Swann.
Art VS Science (30 minutes)
7.15pm –Studio
Work-in-residence collaborators, performance maker Liesel Zink and psychology researcher Rohan Kapitany, discuss their experiences so far in the development of ‘the Psychology Project’ – focusing on how they meld scientific and creative methods in the development of this new work. Facilitated by Metro Arts’ Programming Manager, Kieran Swann.

6.30pm – 8pm – Carriageway
An evening of live art inspired by the theatre of black metal. Come and go at will.

A live improvisation, transforming empty sounds into new environments.
Crude Tools, Feeble Actions, Exhibition & poetry reading by Anastasia Booth
5:30pm – 8.30pm – Gallery
Crude Tools, Feeble Actions expands on Booth’s interest in drawing associations between art history and erotica – how notions of materiality, marginality, and rituality can be linked to both sexual fetish and contemporary art practice.
Exploring the intimacy of spoken word and the sensual experience of text and personal narrative, Anastasia hosts live poetry readings in the gallery that will feature a range of artists and guests including Dhana Merritt, Archie Moore, and Courtney Pederson. Come and go at will.
Boxcopy Slide Night Series – Elizabeth Willing
7pm – 8pm – Level 3
Elizabeth Willing discusses the development of her practice over the last four years, and her experiences with the Experimental Food Society in London. In her current exhibition at Boxcopy, Leaving the Table, Willing explores anxieties and beliefs around feeding and food in a society becoming increasingly aware of what they eat.
5.30pm to 8.30pm – Open Studios, Levels 2, 3 & 4
Across the course of the night, some of our artist tenants are opening their doors to share and discuss their work. Drop in, see what they’re up to, and have a chat.
