Indigenous Art Collection

31st March - 17th June

QUT Art Museum

WHEN : 31st March – 17th June
WHERE : QUT Art Museum

The first pieces of Indigenous art held in the QUT Art Collection—two traditional bark paintings from Maningrida in western Arnhem Land—were acquired in the mid 1960s. However, the major part of the Collection has been assembled over the past two decades and continues to be strengthened with new acquisitions today.

Marrka—a word meaning strength in the Warlpiri language, one of the largest Indigenous language groups in Australia—presents the exceptional works from this Collection and encompasses a wide range of styles and media, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, ceramics and fibre arts. The exhibition includes important works by Gordon Bennett, Paddy Sims Tjapaltjarri, Rover Thomas, Judy Watson, Nyapanyapa and Dennis Nona
