Jacqueline Larcombe: The Bowing Rose

Deadline:

9 August
-
August 28
Aster + Asha Gallery (Online)

In her upcoming exhibition, The Bowing Rose, Jacqueline Larcombe pays homage to the decorative impulse of dwellers in urban spaces, those who inscribe marks and traces upon their homes and gardens through everyday practices.

During her walks through Inner West neighbourhoods on Gadigal and Wangal Lands –  both in the necessity of the commute as well as in the embrace of the pleasures found in the neighbourhood stroll – the artist observes these fragmented creative expressions. She then utilises these elements including; the antiquated flourish of love heart security bars, bowing roses, winding vines and flowers, to create vividly coloured paintings and drawings.

These works depict an urban symbolism, where every feature and decorative flourish seems to whisper architectural and mythological reference points. The series also highlights the convergence of nature, the built environment, domesticity and cyclical time always present in daily modern life.
