RICE SKIN is a body of work that stems from the artist’s cultural identity, personal history and her associated challenges. As a Filipino-Australian migrant, Donley uses rice as her medium of choice in order to nostalgically connect to her upbringing. Donley’s mother would burn rice to make a substitute for milk, such that the cooking of rice became an act of survival. Through complex stories and invited participation, RICE SKIN attempts to diversify and pluralise the kind of place we call community: a place where people can feel at home.
