Museum of Brisbane’s major new exhibition, Precious, brings together over 3,000 extraordinary objects from 30 remarkable collections and collectors.

For the first time, these treasured items—often hidden away in suburban homes and institutions—are on public display, offering a rare glimpse into Brisbane’s diverse collecting culture. From Queensland Rugby League memorabilia and international dolls to wind-up tin toys, First Nations woven textiles, and rare band posters, the exhibition is a testament to the personal passions and histories that shape our city.

Objects from institutions such as the Embroiderers’ Guild (Qld), Queensland Maritime Museum, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Qld) sit alongside personal collections of antique beaded purses, model ships, self-pouring teapots, and an extraordinary selection of ‘Aboriginalia’ from acclaimed contemporary artist Tony Albert. Adding to this treasure trove, Museum of Brisbane’s own collection—including fashion from the iconic Easton Pearson Archive—will be featured.

Curated by Dr Sarah Engledow, Precious is more than an exhibition of objects—it’s a celebration of people, their stories, and the meaningful connections we form with the things we collect.

Museum of Brisbane CEO & Director Zoe Graham highlights how Precious reflects our fundamental human instinct to seek, preserve, and cherish objects.“This exhibition invites us to reflect on the things we hold dear, the memories we preserve through objects, and the excitement of discovering something new.”

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner describes Precious as one of the Museum’s most ambitious exhibitions to date, forming part of the 2025 program that will bring more cultural experiences to Brisbane’s CBD.“This exciting collection features thousands of objects from residents and institutions who are passionate about sharing their Brisbane experience with others.”

Precious is an invitation to explore the extraordinary in the everyday—an exhibition that will pique curiosity, ignite nostalgia, and celebrate the collectors who bring history, culture, and stories to life.
