Queensland State Archives welcomes the first ever Artist in Residence, Matt Mawson, on Thursday 1 March 2018. The Queensland cartoonist and illustrator has been invited to create new works in response to the upcoming exhibition surrounding the release of the 1987 Cabinet Minutes, Sunshine Rebooted: the final Bjelke-Petersen Cabinet Minutes.
Matt is a Gold Coast based artist who is an avid contributor of a variety of cartoons, illustrations and poster designs including notable works created during the Bjelke-Petersen era. His cartoons have been published in 4ZZZ’s Radio Times, Brisbane’s satirical magazine, The Cane Toad Times, and the University of Queensland Union’s student magazine Semper Floreat.
Matt will explore the decisions from the last year of the Bjelke-Petersen Government, which was turning point in Queensland history.
The focus is on three key Cabinet Minutes that were the catalyst for positive change in Queensland politics and society:
• the appointment of Tony Fitzgerald AC, QC to lead a Commission of Inquiry into Allegations Relating to the Queensland Police Force
• the World Heritage listing of the Northern Rainforests
• the introduction of AIDS Education in schools.
You can drop in to see Matt’s work from 1 March until 18 May or you can see Matt while he works each Thursday from 10am – 3pm during that period. The work created during his period will be on display at the Sunshine Rebooted exhibition opening on 25 May.
