The R & M McGivern Prize was established through the will of the late Muriel Evelyn McGivern, a local resident and artist of Maroondah, as a lasting legacy supporting the arts in the region. Awarded every three years, the Prize recognises outstanding, original painting in oil or watercolour (including gouache).
For the 2025/26 edition, the Prize will make two acquisitive awards of $25,000. The winning artworks will become part of the Maroondah City Council Art Collection, contributing to the development of a high-quality public collection and the promotion of artistic excellence in painting.
Each iteration of the Prize responds to a specific theme. The 2025/26 theme, ATMOSPHERE, invites artists from across Australia to reflect on the physical and emotional atmospheres that shape perception and experience. In a time marked by climate change and shifting social, cultural, and political conditions, artists are encouraged to respond to notions of atmosphere—from the momentary to the monumental.
