We warmly invite you to the inaugural Ron Hurley Memorial Lecture.
This event is hosted by the Queensland College of Art and will include a lecture by prominent Griffith alumnus and contemporary artist Gordon Hookey. Gordon will speak on the legacy of Ron Hurley as well as share insights from his own career. This will be followed by a panel discussion led by Ron’s daughter, Angelina Hurley, with emerging artists reflecting on the legacy of those who came before them to blaze a trail.
The event draws upon the 2023 NAIDOC theme ‘For our Elders’ and honours the late Ron Hurley. Ron was the first Aboriginal graduate of the Queensland College of Art and the first Aboriginal member of the Board of Trustees of the Queensland Art Gallery. He was widely respected within Indigenous communities. This lecture coincides with the 20th year of Ron’s passing and it is timely to celebrate and reflect upon his legacy.
