Innerspace Contemporary Art

please join us for the opening celebration of backyard worlds, an exhibition of new paintings by sally molloy.

backyard worlds is an exploration of place and identity; a series of preposterous scenarios (worlds within worlds) that aim to collapse the borders between then/now/and later. leaning into the philosophical underpinnings of collage – that is, allowing displaced objects/images to exist in environments for which they were not made without losing their strangeness – the paintings respond to the artist’s awareness of being a strange object herself. references to land as a domestic, suburban, or souvenir consumable as well as bites from children’s books, travel photos and images of noxious pests find a way to coalesce in these works that are inviting and playful but a little bit uneasy and sinister too. for the artist, these works are critical ramblings, little cohesive messes that attempt not to make sense of the link between place and identity but to open up a can of worms relating to that link.

sally molloy is an artist based in brisbane, queensland. she works across disciplines such as painting, video, sculpture, composition, needlework, collage, and poetry, often questioning the implied hierarchy of media with her naïve aesthetic and enthusiasm for play. sally is a current phd candidate at the queensland college of art where she is exploring her relationship to the taken-never-ceded indigenous lands she inhabits, and loves.

enjoy refreshments with the artist, kindly provided by mcphersons wine and young henrys.

innerspace contemporary art (ica) is a roaming gallery that exhibits contemporary art by emerging artists. founded in 2017, ica is an innovative cross between a commercial gallery and an artist-run-initiative model particularly interested in connecting emerging artists with the architecture and design community. ica is based in brisbane, qld and has a curated schedule of artists.

ica acknowledges the traditional owners of the lands in which we live and work. this exhibition takes place on turrbal and jagera country, and we pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.
