Sara Irannejad: A Thousand Interconnections

Deadline:

POP Gallery

Sara Irannejad explores the challenges of displacement by investigating how cultural identity and relationships with place evolve through travel and dislocation.

A Thousand Interconnections showcases works across painting, pyrography, installation and video that are part of a Doctor of Visual Arts research at Queensland College of Art. By addressing issues such as nostalgia, belonging and re-establishment, these works create an array of dialogues between the past and the present, traditional and contemporary, as well as the local and the introduced (exotic).
Locally found natural objects and fragments of old Queensland houses and furniture are adorned with a variety of motifs inspired by ancient Persian imagery and mythology. The video works are developed from images recorded during a recent trip back to Iran, along with sequences recorded through everyday trips around Brisbane. Pyrography, a method used in the past to embellish Australian furniture and domestic items, has also been used with site-specific references, connecting the ancient Persian imagery with the Australian environment.
