Hosted by the QUT Visual Arts discipline, Seeing Things is a one-day symposium for researchers interested in or piqued by the nascent philosophical movement known as Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO).

A subset of the Speculative Realist school of thought, OOO acknowledges, on the one hand, the withdrawn life of objects, their concealment, inaccessibility, and strangeness. On the other hand, it celebrates their aesthetic dimension as something more than good form or candy topping; OOO aims to put the cosmic back into the cosmetic. In seeking to unmask the weirdness of reality by speculating on the nature of objects and relations, OOO has become a seductive and potentially powerful tool for re-envisaging the interplay of things, materials and bodies that occur in creative practice.

This symposium will consider OOO from a range of perspectives, including both its usefulness and limitations, from practice-based and theoretical perspectives.
