Adelaide-based artist Tim Edwards returns to Jan Murphy Gallery with his second solo exhibition, In between space. With a practice spanning over four decades, Edwards continues to refine his bold and distinctive glass vessels that blur the boundaries between drawing and sculpture.
The exhibition explores the optical and conceptual space between two and three dimensions, where light, form, and perception intersect. Beginning with a daily drawing practice, Edwards develops linear sketches that evolve into blown glass vessels. Each piece is then meticulously carved in a reductive process that reveals the graphic, almost illustrative quality characteristic of his work.
“For me, In between space is about the point where drawing and making overlap and reflect back on each other,” Edwards explains. “The ‘other space’ lies somewhere between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional — a space where the depiction of form becomes a kind of visual tug of war.”
This new body of work sees Edwards move toward a more ethereal and distilled visual language, defined by the way light moves through and between his objects. The results are vessels that appear suspended between solidity and transparency, presence and absence.
A graduate of Deakin University and the University of Tasmania, Edwards has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally, including London, The Netherlands, Seattle, and New York. His work is represented in major collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the Corning Museum of Glass (USA).
