This exhibition by Madeleine Preston launches Dispatch, an exchange project between seven window gallery spaces across Australia.
The project comprises of a series of exchanges in which a gallery selects an artist to dispatch artwork for exhibition in another participating gallery, and in return hosts an artist from one of these galleries. For each exhibition the host gallery space will select a local writer to respond to the work. All artworks and writing will simultaneously be exhibited on dedicated website, www.dispatch.com.au to encourage public engagement with every Dispatch exhibition around the country.
Dispatch aims to embrace and explore its numerous inherent challenges and contingencies. It is not the goal of the project to send artists to install artworks into the different window galleries spaces, but rather for them to find creative solutions to transfer, transport or transmit their work to another space.
Participating spaces are Current Projects @ Ryan Renshaw Gallery Windowbox, SLOT, Branch3D, PropagandaWindow, Seventh Gallery’s Workers Window, 24HR Art’s Box Set, and Shopfront Gallery. Madeleine has been dispatched to Current Project’s window space from participating space BRANCH3D in Sydney.
Madeleine’s Preston is a Sydney based artist primarily producing oil paintings, installation, and three-dimensional pieces. The creation of her work however, is generally informed by the content. A current focus is how we choose to remember the past and perhaps more importantly how we choose to forget. Her work for Dispatch, “… to each”, engages with the retail connotations of window display spaces, conflating them with a renowned quote in order to draw attention to ideas of production and judgment in art.
Current Projects’ own Amy-Clare McCarthy will be writing in response to Madeleine’s work, with the essay to be published on the website.
