One of our final Transition workshops for 2016 will explore the offerings of artists with disability and the trends, ideas and innovations in access in the arts. Speakers Sarah Houbolt and Leanne Beer will discuss leadership, the concept of inclusion, benefits of providing access and the new methodologies that result from the need to provide access.
Sarah Houbolt is a professional performance artist with a background in circus, physical theatre and integrated dance. Recently Sarah was a presenter at The Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Freaks like me talking about the place on our stages and in public life for performers who don’t fit the conventional view of what an artist should be. In 2015, she worked in the Sideshow Wonderland at Adelaide Fringe, was a Sync leader (Australia Council for the Arts), undertook the UnFixed residency which explored art, technology and disability, and produced her own one woman show entitled KooKoo the Birdgirl.
Creative Access is a Brisbane based Auslan Interpreting Service, established by Leanne Beer and Bec Jones, who between them have a wealth of experience in the arts as interpreters, practitioners and administrators. They provide quality services tailored to the needs of arts and cultural organisations through engaging in a collaborative manner. They are committed to working alongside the Deaf community to create opportunities for Deaf and hard of hearing people to experience, enjoy, participate and work in the arts. They will talk about the professional performance interpreting process ie what and how much is involved to have an Auslan interpreter at a show, and more broadly about their challenges and goals for the future.
Following the workshop Sarah Houbolt will discuss the 1932 film Freaks before its screening at 7.30pm. Please note that the film is ticketed and bookings are required.
