Deadline:

WHEN : Until 14th April
WHERE : Phillip Bacon Galleries

Before immigrating to Australia I studied Biology, Microbiology and Theology in Würzburg and Munich. After my arrival in Australia in 1986 I decided to study art and completed a BFA and MFA at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne and later a PhD at Monash University (2007).

My science background with a focus on fresh water ecology now contributes a substantial part of the content I employ in my studio program, applying and exploring specialist knowledge with a variety of media including painting, sculpture, installation and photography.

The themes I pursue in my practice have been manifold and could be characterised as a sustained examination of the fluid boundaries between ‘naturalia’ and ‘artificialia’, biotech and nature, the real and the imagined. Particular subjects I continue to explore are notions of hybridity in biology and ideas relating to hypothetical or imaginary specimens.

Within these contexts the scientific research conducted in the Great Barrier Reef zone are of special interest to me, as are the shifting perceptions and cultural representations of this vast and diverse marine environment.
