Art from the Margins

Art from the Margins (AFTM) presents our second Inspired AIR (Artist-in-Residence) exhibition Woven and Tied: Women’s Work? a showcase of fibre and textile artworks from Artist-in-Residence Therese Flynn-Clarke and AFTM Outsider Artists.

AFTM, a creative initiative of Wesley Mission Queensland, supports, exhibits and promotes the work of artists living with adversity, mental health issues, physical or intellectual disabilities, or experiencing homelessness and social isolation.

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2019, the Woven and Tied exhibition challenges the stereotypes of what is considered ‘women’s work’ in the art world, reinventing the traditional skills of basketry and stitching.

Brisbane-based Therese Flynn-Clarke works in a range of media as an artist and art educator. She has exhibited widely in Queensland and Interstate and has participated in many community art projects, including coordinating the 2017 National Basketry Gathering Australia. The exhibition is the culmination of her six week mentorship with AFTM Outsider Artists: Vanessa Buiskool, Felicity Clarke, Rebekah Copas, Aunty Dawn Daylight, Duane Doyle, Jenny Jump, Aunty Marlene Wilson, Karen O’Neill and Maureen Young.

Woven and Tied: Women’s Work? opens on Saturday 2 March at the start of Queensland Women’s Week. Join Therese Flynn-Clarke and the artists at 2pm for a free Make and Take, followed by the Official Opening at 3pm with special guests, Maroochy Barambah and Dr Jennifer Nayler. Please RSVP by Thursday 28 February 07 3151 6655 or email aftm@wmq.org.au.

On International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March, AFTM Gallery & Studios will host a morning tea in conjunction with the exhibition for members of the community to share their memories of making.

Woven and Tied: Women’s Work? is on display until Saturday 6 April, at the AFTM Gallery & Studios, 136 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday. Page of 2

Inspired AIR has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments.
