BACK AND FORTH is an art exhibition that pitches a number of Australian visual artists alongside some of Australia’s most exciting djs in a collaboration that celebrates the culture and tradition of the mix-tape. Inspiration itself comes in many forms and the relationship between the development of visual creativity and music is one that goes hand in hand for many artists.
The BACK AND FORTH exhibition lifts the veil on the musical inspiration behind the artworks on display for djs to manipulate further and re-interpret in their own way. These new compositions are then transferred to cassette in the form of mix-tapes to be experienced in the gallery setting alongside the original art pieces.
Mix-tape culture developed through a love of compiling songs onto cassettes. These compilations were however, more than a reflection of the musical taste of the compiler, they often served as highly personal statements tailored to the intended recipients. Mix-tapes marked a moment in time when consumers of culture became producers of it by gaining ultimate control over how they chose to compile, share and distribute among friends and social groups.
BACK AND FORTH invites artists to create a track-listing of songs listened to while creating artwork. This selection is given to a DJ who then manipulates the music and produces a mix-tape based on both the song selection and the actual artwork produced. The BACK AND FORTH exhibition will showcase a broad range of new works from a varied selection of artists including Ben Ely (Regurgitator) , Mark Drew, Slurpee Slug, Amy Longworth, Jesse Olsen and Drew Bickford. There will also be a large installation piece created for the event by artists BEASTMAN and GIMIKS BORN. The DJ’s showcased include Sampology, DJ Katch (Resin Dogs), Cutloose, Slynk, DJ Bacon, and DJ Butcher. This is Semi-Permanent sideshow and the OFFICIAL after-party. Curated by Benjamin Reeve for The Bureau.
