Panel Talk: The Search for Warrajamba

Deadline:

Redlands Art Gallery

The Search for Warrajamba is the culmination of Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins’ Doctor of Philosophy research in Indigenous Perspectives (Creative Arts) at the Batchelor Institute. Through installations, prints and ceramics, Cockatoo-Collins explores identity and artistic mediums as part of an inquiry into a generational oral story of a mermaid named Warrajamba – a cultural figure first introduced to her by the words of her grandmother.

Responding to historical accounts of Warrajamba by Archibald Meston, a ‘former protector of Aborigines for Southern Queensland,’ the exhibitionhonours an important cultural narrative whilst celebrating family, Country and story-telling. Delvene Cockatoo-Collins was engaged to design the artwork for the Gold Coast 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games medals. To coincide with the Queen’s Baton Relay on Saturday 31 March and in support of Delvene and her achievement RAG, Cleveland has extended its opening hours over the Easter
long weekend.
