For his inaugural solo exhibition with Jan Murphy Gallery, John Nicholson will present a new body of works that extends his interest in technology. Drop Downs will feature colourful, layered sculptural acrylic works with matte, gloss and mirrored surfaces.
The use of advanced technology is an everyday occupation not only in my interaction with the world, but in the production of my work. It reflects a continuing fascination with a material that is linked to the high ideals of industry.
Whereas previous works have contemplated the computer screen and the imaginary/real spaces residing behind the luminous monitor, this series investigates how layers of human and machine productivity come to build a three dimensional object. Technology has given us the ability to open multiple lines of investigation simultaneously and the expectation that they are not mutually exclusive. John Nicholson
Since graduating from the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Nicholson has exhibited widely in Melbourne and Sydney. He has held studio residencies at the Bundanon Trust Artist Centre and at OMI International Art Centre in New York. His works are held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas, including in the collections of Artbank, Deutsche Bank, the University of Queensland Art Museum, Mirvac Corporation, Bond University and Penrith Regional Gallery, as well as in the collections of Goyang City in Seoul and OMI Arts Centre in New York.
In 2010, the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) commissioned Nicholson’s artwork for the ‘Skygate’ Brisbane Airport Village, where it is currently on permanent public display. His large kaleidoscopic work, Total Expansion, was commissioned for the recently opened W Hotel in Brisbane, where it currently hangs in their lobby. He is a finalist in the 2018 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and the Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award 2018.
