These small scale works of oil on board represent two parallel series. Each series signifies a step in an artistic process characterized by transit between formats. From collage to maquette, photograph to painting, this process is marked by iteration. Paper is central to these works as it provides the content- colour. Cut out scraps of paper become the painted colour forms and planes. Process based making completely shirks the artists’ intention.
At the start, these works were inspired by colour theory,
perspectival tricks and phenomenology. In the end, the work turned out to not really be about these concepts at all. Instead, they seem to be sentimental speculations on doubt and uncertainty.
