MONO51 drifts into the surround terrain with spatial performances from two generations of Australia sound makers.
Warren Burt, whilst born in the USA, is one of Australia’s unsung sonic heroes. Arriving here in 1975, he has been responsible for a diverse array of truly iconic works the exist between the markers of experimental music, minimalism, electronics, microtonality and all manner of electro-acoustics. His sonic curiosity has resulted in over five decades of music making that can only be described as an entire universe of sound. For MONO51, Burt presents a new quadraphonic audiovisual work that typifies his way in sound.
Joining Burt is Naarm based artist Amby Downs. Amby Downs is the musical pseudonym of interdisciplinary artist Tahlia Palmer, an artist of Murri and European background born on Whudjuk Noongar Boodjar (Perth, WA). Working in a variety of mediums to explore history, identity and perception Palmer is descended from a paternal line who survived dispossession and forced assimilation (NSW+QLD), and maternal Dutch grandparents who survived WW2. Her works confront the conditions that create and perpetuate inter-generational trauma, as well as finding pathways for healing. She presents a spatial work that expands outward from the sound worlds captured on her acclaimed Ngunmal album.
