‘Breath Drawings’ features a series of new works on paper by Melbourne-based artist Brett Colquhoun. Gemma Smith ‘Weight and Waver’ continues downstairs until 4 July.
Brett Colquhoun’s lightness of touch results in paintings and drawings that exude a strange and elegant mystery. Forever in search of ways to articulate states of being, moments in time and ways of seeing the world, Colquhoun produces moments of introspection where figurative elements provide a way into more timeless and profound issues.
Colquhoun has a distinguished exhibiting history, having been part of the pivotal Australian institutions Art Projects, Gertrude Street and Pinacotheca. Since 1982 Colquhoun has regularly exhibited paintings, holding numerous solo shows at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne. Recent group exhibitions include MELBOURNE/BRISBANE: punk/art/music, then and now, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne, 2010, and The Shilo Project, curated by Chris McAuliffe, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne and Wangaratta Art Gallery, Victoria, 2009.
