Artists: Andrew Hillhouse, Shannon O’Hara, Arryn Snowball, Minqi Gu, Saffron Newey, Kenji Uranishi
Between Surfaces brings together six contemporary artists whose practices explore materiality, abstraction and the relationship between surface, form and perception.
Spanning painting, ceramics, textiles and mixed media, the exhibition considers how texture, process and material can shape emotional, psychological and sensory experiences. Each artist approaches surface as both a physical and conceptual space — one that holds memory, identity, transformation and experimentation.
Andrew Hillhouse presents abstracted impressions of the natural environment through textured acrylic paintings inspired by the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Shannon O’Hara investigates embodiment and abstraction through textile materiality and decorative methodologies. Arryn Snowball’s process-based works navigate systems of language, form and collaboration, while Minqi Gu explores material experimentation through clay, recycled objects and bio-plastics.
Saffron Newey examines the legacy of landscape painting in the digital age, reworking historical imagery through shifts in colour, format and resolution. Kenji Uranishi’s porcelain sculptures draw from Japanese ceramic traditions while engaging contemporary architectural and sculptural forms.
Together, Between Surfaces creates a dialogue between artists working across diverse mediums yet united by an interest in transformation, tactility and the expressive possibilities of material practice.
