Hailing from a regional Queensland city, usually associated with high unemployment, expanding waistlines, the home of Bundaberg Rum and turtles – a new exhibition at Bleeding Heart wants to showcase an alternative side to the “Rum City”.
Bundaberg Bohemians, Not Bogans will showcase sculpture, assemblage, photography, ceramics, painting and other mixed mediums by eleven of the Bundaberg regions’ most prolific contemporary artists when it opens at Bleeding Heart on Friday 18th January.
Ranging from emerging artists who are being shown in a gallery for the first time (Sam McKenna) to artists who have over 20 years of art practice under their belt (Christine Turner, Jennifer McDuff, Clinton Cross and more), this exhibition aims to excite audiences with a vast variety of weird, wonderful and contemporary works.
Curator of the exhibition Jess Marsellos from Creative Regions – a not for profit arts management and production company based in Bundaberg – said the exhibition is a great chance to showcase local artists work outside of the direct area. “These artists live and breathe art as a career, they often showcase locally or in other regional art galleries but this exhibition is a great chance to demonstrate the quality and diversity of works which exist in Bundaberg,” Mrs Marsellos said.
Mrs Marsellos also said the exhibition is a great example of city centers and regional organisations working together. “The Bleeding Heart emerging curator program is a fantastic opportunity for regional artists and arts orgnanisations to take control and gain exposure in city markets, I hope that opportunities like these continue,” she said.
Artists who will be showcased as part of this exhibition include Clinton Cross, Christine Turner, Jennifer McDuff, Ann Groctt, Dave Machen, Marlies Oakley, Samantha McKenna, Brad Marsellos, Dennis Mealor, Susan Hutton and Jenny Gilbertson.
Bundaberg locals, Tabletop Lamps will also be showcasing their musical talents on opening night.
