Clare Opatra: Pear Shaped

26th May, 2:00 - 4:00pm

Bunyapa Park, West End

Pear Shaped is an ephemeral public artwork by Clare Opatra inviting passers-by to anonymously share an experience of failure. The work arises from an encounter with the writings of queer theorist Jack Halberstam in 2014 and the artist’s personal exhaustion with forms of agency fixated on negation and transcendence. The work makes space for ‘ordinariness’, humour, as well as what cultural theorist Sianne Ngai terms ‘ugly feelings’ (Ngai, S. 2005). The work engages a ‘soft voyeurism’ and explores the resonances and/or dissonances of unorchestrated collective narrative.

With the goal of fostering accessibility and bridging the gap between art and audience, the artist will facilitate a talking circle during the exhibition.
