Join Dean Ansell on Friday 8 March 2024 from 6 – 9 PM for an embodied sound performance where he enacts gori (legend), mourns with his ancestors, channels Riḡorabana ḡalluka babalau (creek spirits), and partakes in ginikoi (cleanse by water).
Dean Ansell is a multidisciplinary artist of Melanesian (Riḡorabana and Balawaia, Papua Niugini), Maltese, and Anglo-Celtic descent living and practicing in Meanjin. His practice connects his cultural heritage to material processes that harness his body and the environment. Spanning installation, soundscape, and embodied performance, Ansell stages ritualistic site-responsive mediations that draw attention to natural systems of transformation. Poetically correlating these universal material changes with his personal experiences of cultural displacement, Ansell’s work is an expression of the complexities of his Melanesian diasporic experience.
Event: 8th March, 6:00 – 9:00pm
