The vivacious and vibrant collages of SIMPLE FUTURE consolidate photographer and visual artist James Hornsby’s exploration of our digital and ‘real’ lives. Through his first solo exhibition Hornsby deconstructs the presumed ‘truth’ of photography and the industrial processes behind the advertising and media photographic industry.
His practice incorporates photography, painting, found objects and other media to produce layered collage, affixing photographic cutups to industrial surfaces including acrylic and aluminium. Hornsby adopts the digital manipulation and retouching techniques that distort and sexualise the human form in order to create something familiar but also disturbing. By combining digital and physical collage Hornsby’s collage constructions are layered – physically and conceptually.

Known for vivid coloured collages and large scale immersive projections, James Hornsby has quickly become recognized in the Brisbane emerging art scene for his significant style.
Graduating with a Bachelor of Photography, majoring in Art Practice with Honours in 2016. James Hornsby is an interdisciplinary artist who explores exchanges between digital technology and “real life”. Focusing on his own fascination and relationship with digital technologies, Hornsby’s recent works navigate exchange, intimacy and reliance in a digital era.
The artist’s visual exploration incorporates photography, painting, found objects and other media subjected to evident digital manipulation and re-imaged as large scale lurid compositions.
Often described as surreal, post internet and popular, the outcome presents a hyper coloured, perplexing mashup of digital and physical elements. Pushing the boundaries of the audience’s perception, the work takes a closer look at the complexity of our culture in a techno-reliant world.
