Jeremy Hynes Award Recipient: Tay Haggarty.

Since 2009, the IMA has had the honour of presenting the $10,000 Jeremy Hynes Award to a risk-taking Queensland artist in the early stages of their career, made possible through a bequest made by the family of Jeremy Hynes in his name.

At the IMA Annual Party on Saturday we were thrilled to announce the recipient of the sixth biennial Jeremy Hynes Award—Brisbane-based artist Tay Haggarty.

Haggarty was selected by judges Justene WilliamsTony Albert, and IMA Director Liz Nowell from a pool of strong submissions. Nowell says “After a highly competitive application process, my fellow judges and I are thrilled to award this year’s Jeremy Hynes Award to Tay Haggarty. Tay’s bold sculptural installation and performances not only capture the spirit of Jeremy’s artistic practice, but also demonstrate a commitment to risk taking and ambition in scale and vision.”

Haggarty joins an alumni of outstanding Jeremy Hynes Award recipients including Lu ForsbergLiam O’Brien, and Chris Howlett. They will be awarded $10,000 and will receive mentorship to produce a solo exhibition at the IMA for mid 2020.
