The Institute of Modern Art presents the first Australian institutional solo exhibition by acclaimed Canadian artist Jon Rafman.
Memento Hikikomori brings together a selection of works exploring the technological mediation of memory, the formation of identity and the collective unconscious of online experience. Drawing its title from the concepts of memento mori and hikikomori, the exhibition examines contemporary forms of isolation, digital immersion and our evolving relationship with technology.
Known for his exploratory and anthropological approach to internet culture, Rafman investigates the darker corners of networked life through video, artificial intelligence, digital imagery and installation. The exhibition includes works from his ongoing Nine Eyes series, the AI-generated Main Stream Media Network, immersive viewing environments and major video works spanning more than a decade of practice.
