Jan Murphy Gallery presents L A Was Here, a new exhibition of sculptural works by Lincoln Austin.
Taking its title from a childhood act of carving his name into a playground door, this exhibition expands on the impulse to leave a mark—exploring themes of belonging, communication, and permanence. Austin considers how humans seek connection through shared systems of meaning, particularly language, while also examining how gestures, labour, and aesthetics function as forms of communication.
These works transform text into sculptural forms, using the “English” language as a visual and material code. Through a playful and distinctly queer aesthetic, Austin constructs layered compositions where words, materials, and form intersect. The resulting works operate simultaneously as communication and disruption—inviting viewers to decode, interpret, and question meaning.
Incorporating humour, ambiguity, and references to popular music, the exhibition reflects on identity and self-affirmation. What was once a fleeting, mischievous inscription—“L A Was Here”—is reframed as a poignant and enduring declaration of presence.
