Shift 2

Deadline:

In Residence ARI

In residence, a Brisbane-based Artist Run Initiative (ARI), is proud to announce that its second exhibition ‘Shift 2,’ will take place on 3 June 2016, 6pm til 10pm at 193 Arthur Street in New Farm.

Shift 2 is the second part of a two-part exhibition series leading on from Shift 1 held April 2 2016. Shift 1 explored the effects of physical displacement, like relocating to a new country or being classified as ‘other’ on the basis of ethnicity. Shift 2 will build on this theme by inviting emerging Brisbane-based artists to explore psychological and societal displacement. The invited artists have taken varied approaches to this theme including investigations into gender, sexuality, identity, displaced objects and memories and the confusion and anxieties associated with feeling displaced in the world. The work will take various forms including performance, video, sculpture, interactive digital media and kinetic sculpture.c sculpture.

In Residence is proud to announce that Shift 2 will feature the work of:

Parallel Park
James Barth
Earnest & Son
Hailey Atkins

Parallel Park is the collaborative art practice between Brisbane-based artists Holly Bates and Tayla Jay Haggarty who use humour and spontaneity to playfully explore lesbian sexuality and their own romantic relationship. For the last two years they have collaborated to create engaging and experimental mixed-media works encompassing found objects, sculpture, video and performance. See more of their work at:parallelpark.org

James Barth is currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with Honours) at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, working primarily with painting and digital media. Their work explores the divisions of their emotional and intellectual cognitions in how they present and perceive personal gendered narratives and addresses the ambivalence of their current gendered body and the significance of self censorship and visibility in relation to trans bodies.

Earnest & Son is an ongoing collaborative practice between Jordan Azcune and Liam Marsden, who are both completing honours in Visual Arts at the Queensland University of Technology. Their collaboration explores ideas of mastership, masculinity and legitimacy. Their predominantly sculpture-based practice explores everyday materials in unconventional ways, drawing from external art historical influences and a desire to express internal anxieties in physical objects. See more of their work at:http://earnestandson.com/

Hailey Atkins is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with Honours) at Queensland College of Art. Her current work explores and challenges social representations of vulnerability as failure. Using a combination of found and industrially sourced materials; her awkwardly assembled sculptures reflect a tentative negotiation of vulnerability and femininity in both private and social landscapes. See more of their work at: haileyatkins.net
