Robert Andrew’s three-dimensional, mechanical devices question and resist the dominant narratives of colonisation in Australia. His machines visually articulate and give authority to an Australian Aboriginal experience. Combining text, organic materials, and technology, Andrew scrapes back layers of colonial control and concealment to reveal the hidden, forgotten, denied and ever-changing histories of Australia’s first people.

The materials used in his constructions make symbolic connections to place, to family, and to a history and culture that are deeply personal. At the same time, Andrew connects all who would make Australia stronger through acknowledging its past. His goal is to deflect the violent, debasing and destructive energies of colonialism and to create positive expressions of Aboriginality.
