Rachael Bartram: Threatened Birds

Deadline:

The Third Quater

Brisbane Artist Rachael Bartram has considered the origins of collage in contrast to how we as consumers, process and re-process imagery today via the Internet, social media and fast evolving A.I. technology. At the same time, the Artist contemplates her continued use of images as both a modern woman and practicing Artist. By experimenting with digital processes Bartram is able to investigate not only the design parametres of the poster format, but the socio-political function of it as a ‘shareable’ digital item.

In ‘Threatened Birds’ contemporary ‘posters’ are thematically driven by current inequalities woman & non gender-binary people face, and the innate desire to reach intersectionality. When referencing ‘birds’ Bartram connects directly to catcalling and public street harassment, and how this can be recreated using hyper-optimistic imagery and cunning design.
Bartram is using the analogue processes of collage and the digital processes of print and design to visually subvert the way images of gender are constructed, inviting viewers to consider how we reflect and represent women in a modern Australia.
