Documentary Night: Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time

Deadline:

House Conspiracy

Once a month we will screen a documentary that relates to human rights, anti-fascism and dismantling violent systems of power, at House Conspiracy community space in West End. The events will take place on the stolen land of the Yuggera and Turrbal peoples of Meanjin (Brisbane and surrounds), whose sovereignty over these lands has never been ceded.
The second film will be ‘Chauka, Please Tell Us The Time’ (2017), which was co-created by Kurdish-Iranian refugee Behrouz Boochani and Netherlands-based Iranian filmmaker Arash Kamali Sarvestani. The film was was shot by Boochani from inside Australia’s Manus Island detention centre in Papua New Guinea.
From 2013-2019, Behrouz Boochani was detained in indefinite detention on Manus Island followed by community detention in Port Moresby. He is now based in New Zealand where he was granted refugee status in August 2020. He is a journalist, human rights activist, movie producer and writer of ‘No Friend but the Mountains: Writing From Manus Prison’.
Arash Kamali Sarvestani has just released his second film documenting life in indefinite detention ‘Tall Fences, Taller Trees’.
In order to pay the film-makers the minimum amount required and screen the film with their consent, we will be pre-selling tickets on a sliding scale of $10-$20. Once we make the artist fee we will sell the remaining tickets at our usual suggested donation on $10 with no one turned away for lack of funds, in line with House Conspiracy’s gift economy philosophy. If you would like to purchase a ticket, please message our Facebook page.
Any ticket sales after the artist fee will be donated to the Romero Centre to assist with their advocacy and support projects for refugees in Meanjin.
Please get in touch if you would like to choose a film for one of the coming months.
**This film is being screened with the consent of the creators and an agreed amount of the funds raised will go to them
