Duane Doyle: Art Family

Deadline:

6 November
-
November 14
Side Gallery

Duane Doyle is a proud Jiman (yimen) artist from Central Queensland. He identifies with his mother’s animal totem, the Googoobing (scrub turkey), which is central to his practice and storytelling. Through his work, Duane honours the Googoobing by sharing stories of Gummoo Wongarra (one water), which flows from the Carnarvon Gorge ranges. His art invites reconciliation with non-Indigenous people by fostering coexistence and breaking down fears.

In the 1990s, Duane began painting alongside hard labouring jobs. He was mentored by Ghungalu and Garingbal woman Aunty Patsy Kemp-Leisha, who encouraged him to “keep practising,” a message he has carried throughout his journey. His art provides a space for patience, acceptance, organisation, reflection, and healing.

Since joining the Art Gang at West End Community House, Duane has exhibited across Brisbane, painted public murals, and run cultural workshops. Above all, the Art Gang has given him a sense of family — inspiring this new body of work, Art Family.

You’re invited to the opening event on Thursday, 6 November from 6:00 pm.
