Amidst the Jewels of Us – Night Series is a multidisciplinary exhibition by Brisbane/Meanjin artist Jane Thompson, bringing together original abstract paintings, poetry and sound to explore the rhythms of time, memory and the natural world.
The exhibition presents twelve paintings, each paired with a corresponding poem from the publication Amidst the Jewels of Us and accompanied by a musical soundscape by Aiko Takahashi. Thompson’s poetic writings, created under the alias Veda Laferne, form an integral part of the exhibition, inviting visitors to slow down and reconnect with a more intuitive and natural pace of being.
Working with fluid acrylics, oil sticks and graphite, Thompson’s abstract paintings emerge through an intuitive process that reflects themes of nature, imagination and the unseen. The exhibition encourages audiences to reconsider the structure of the everyday by assigning each artwork to an hour of the day, creating a contemplative journey through time and experience.
As part of the exhibition, Thompson’s artwork Enough Is What’s Left will be auctioned to raise funds for the Second Chance Program, supporting women and children at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness and domestic violence. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the charity.
