Stories of daylight presents a new body of landscape paintings by Adam Pyett, developed through his long-term engagement with the Macedon Ranges in Victoria.
Pyett’s paintings explore how landscapes are experienced through repetition, memory and changing light. Working from drawings made on site, he develops his paintings later in the studio, alongside small gouache works that explore colour, composition and atmosphere. Exhibited publicly for the first time, these gouaches reveal another aspect of his painting practice.
Rather than seeking to faithfully reconstruct a particular place or moment, Pyett allows colour and light to shape the emotional experience of the landscape. His paintings emerge from repeated encounters with place, reflecting the changing relationships between geography, history, memory and observation.
Pyett has exhibited widely across Australia and was the subject of a solo survey, Still Life Painting, at Geelong Gallery in 2017. His work is held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Monash University Museum of Art, Geelong Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ballarat, Bendigo Art Gallery, Tweed Regional Gallery and Artbank.
