An historical view of Australia and its people seen through the camera’s lens will be unveiled when ‘The Photograph and Australia’ opens this weekend at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG).
The exhibition, on tour from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, traces the evolution of photography in Australia since the 1840s and is on display at QAG from 4 July to 11 October 2015.
The largest exhibition of its type since 1988, ‘The Photograph and Australia’ offers visitors a comprehensive look at how photography has shaped the country.
Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Deputy Director, Collection and Exhibitions, Maud Page said the exhibition featured over 600 photographs including iconic Australian images from the Gallery’s own Collection.
‘The exhibition proposes a new way of thinking about the connections between photography, place and identity and examines the early views Australia portrayed to the world as a young nation,’ Ms Page said.
‘This exhibition is a rare chance for Gallery visitors to see these remarkable works in person.’
Sourced from more than 35 private and public collections across Australia, New Zealand and England, the exhibition features works by renowned artists, as well as images by unknown photographers, as well as a selection of everyday material such as family albums and postcards.
Artists include Frank Hurley, Harold Cazneaux, Olive Cotton, Max Dupain, David Moore, Sue Ford, Tracey Moffatt, Simryn Gill, Robyn Stacey and Ricky Maynard among many others.
This Saturday 4 July at 11.00am exhibition curator Judy Annear, Senior Curator, Photographs, Art Gallery of New South Wales will give a free keynote talk at QAG’s Lecture Theatre, to share insights into the development of the exhibition.
Judy Annear will then be joined by QAGOMA’s Associate Curator, Australian Art Michael Hawker for an informal exhibition tour at 1.00pm, followed by an exhibition floor talk by exhibiting artists Patrick Pound and Rowan McNaught at 2.00pm.
