Art Guide New Writers’ Program: Callout for Emerging Voices

Deadline:

Deadline: April 30

Art Guide Australia, in partnership with the Emerging Writers’ Festival (EWF), announces the inaugural Art Guide New Writers’ Program—a year-long opportunity designed to support and elevate early-career art and culture writers across Australia.

Recognising the vital role writers and critics play in shaping cultural conversations, the program responds to a growing need for thoughtful, sustained perspectives on Australian art. It offers three emerging writers the chance to develop their critical voice, collaborate with editors, and publish original work.

Participants will work with the Art Guide editorial team over twelve months to produce three pieces of writing, including an interview-led feature and an exhibition response, published online. Writers will also have the opportunity to pitch their own ideas and be paid for their contributions.

The program is open to early-career writers nationwide who are interested in writing about art and culture for a broad audience and have limited prior publication experience. Applicants should demonstrate a clear vision for how the program aligns with their practice. Writers from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

An accompanying online workshop, led by editor-at-large Neha Kale and the Art Guide team, will introduce participants to the craft of art writing and provide insight into the program.

How to Apply
Applicants must submit:

  • A brief cover letter
  • A one-page CV
  • A writing sample (maximum 1000 words)

The cover letter should outline your engagement with art, your interest in writing, and how the program will support your development. Applicants are also required to propose one idea for a feature, essay, or profile suitable for publication.
