Melbourne artist Martin Tighe’s new collection Leaven Bread features thirteen still life paintings.
This series of paintings is a continuation of the artist’s fascination with bread and its significance in our lives. Bread as a subject has layered meanings in society, from symbolising basic nourishment to complex religious iconography.
‘ Bread is often a universal and overarching theme. We think of the table, food, family, sharing, nourishment, fuel, fire, hearth, home – life.
There is something transcendental about bread – it’s an ancient human staple, and like the dog, the rat and alcohol, always nearby most of the time.’ –Martin Tighe.
Tighe has had many solo and group exhibitions and has been a finalist in prestigious prizes such as the Archibald, The Tattersall’s Landscape prize and the Salon des Refuses.
