Regional creative practice is often overlooked in histories that emanate from established centres of cultural activity. Australian animation production is generally associated with Sydney and Melbourne, and little of the pre-digital commercial work generated outside these spheres has been recorded in national surveys.
Max Bannah has worked as an animator in Queensland since 1976. He joins us to talk about his career, including the influences and events that led to the establishment of a small studio in Brisbane. He reflects on his regional context and some of the ways in which his life, and those of his local predecessors, has intersected with animation; in particular, how this relationship was built on ambivalence – seeking creative expression while trying to make a living in a community offering few outlets for animation.
