Deadline:

-
December 2
Woolloongabba Art Gallery

Stephen Nothling was born in 1962. He completed a Diploma of art in 1984 at Queensland College of Art and a Master of Arts in Visual Arts at Queensland University in 1994. Nothling has suffered problems with his eyesight since birth but since his early 20s has been committed to making art. From 1995-2005 he made flower-focused works, however now his subject matter has turned to his neighborhood, he depicts Louisa Street where he has lived for the last fourteen years. His paintings are his personal interpretation, recordings of mundane activities such as his neighbor mowing the lawn or the weekly garbage bin collection, with a detailed style and unique aesthetic. He had his first solo exhibition in 1988 at Metro Arts, Brisbane and was represented by Eva Breuer Art Dealer in Sydney for many years. He has also featured in many group exhibitions, and has exhibited as a finalist in the Gallipoli Art Prize, The Dobell Prize for Drawing and the Archibald Prize. He has won awards including the National Australia Bank Award in 1992, 1990 Conrad and Gargett Architects Award for Painting in 1990. He is represented in the Parliament House Collection, Canberra, Macquarie University, Queensland University of Technology, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Queensland Art Gallery, Australian National Gallery, Warrnambool Civic Art Gallery, University of Tasmania, Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery as well as other private and public collections.
