Portrait of an artist: Richard Bell

Deadline:

August 3
State Library Queensland

Don’t miss our final Portrait of an artist event for 2023 featuring nationally and internationally acclaimed First Nations artist Richard Bell, fresh from his recent exhibition at the Tate Modern in London! Richard will be live and in-conversation with renowned First Nations photographer Michael Aird, also Director of University of Queensland’s Anthropology Museum.

Richard Bell (Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang) was born in Charleville, Queensland, in 1953. He came to art through political activism, and has fought for the rights of Aboriginal people over many decades. Working across video, installation, painting and text, Bell’s work is sharp and satirical, always seeking to challenge preconceived ideas of what Aboriginal art is or should be.

Bell co-founded the ProppaNOW artists’ collective in Brisbane in 2003. While relatively successful in the ensuing decade, his art career has gained serious momentum in the last few years. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2015, and his ongoing project Embassy has been displayed all over the world, including most recently in the main Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in May and June this year.

Richard Bell will be in-conversation with Michael Aird, Director of University of Queensland’s Anthropology Museum, and a renowned First Nations photographer himself.

This event will feature a screening of Richard Bell’s interview from the James C. Sourris Collection of Artist Interviews, followed by a Q&A session.

Artist Talk: Thu 3 Aug · 6:30–7:30pm
