Drawing on the Pause presents a series of figurative, abstract, and diagrammatic works inspired by improvised music. Created between December 2019 and November 2020, the exhibition spans the period just prior to the pandemic until the end of Melbourne’s second lockdown.

During this time of social distancing, artist Briony Barr created hundreds of drawings in response to improvised musical acts created and presented online. This was made possible through the Make It Up Club’s weekly Online Concert series, and by joining the newly formed Isolation Improvisation Collective; a group of musicians, artists & dancers who met regularly during the 2020 lockdown to improvise and record together over Zoom.

Comprising works on paper, paintings and video documentation, Drawing on the Pause explores connections between mark making, sound and improvisation, isolation, collaboration and generative limits.

Opening event: Friday 8th September from 6 – 8 pm, featuring live drawing by Briony Barr and improvised sound by Hannah Reardon Smith, Lisa Tran Kelly & Jodie Rottle
