Entries are now open for the KILGOUR PRIZE 2017, Newcastle Art Gallery’s national art prize recognising the finest examples of Australian figurative and portrait painting. Artists are invited to submit their entries for this year’s prize, valued at $50,000, by Friday 28 April 2017.
This year, the Gallery has introduced a new online entry process, making it easier than ever for artists to enter the competition. More information and the online entry form are available on Newcastle Art Gallery’s website, www.nag.org.au.
One of the country’s most lucrative art awards, the KILGOUR PRIZE awards $50,000 to the winning artist. Submissions must in some way represent the human form by means of a figure or portrait likeness and the work must be executed in painting media including oil, acrylic, watercolour and/or mixed media.
The judging panel for the Kilgour Prize is comprised of the manager of Newcastle Art Gallery and two guest judges who are prominent in the Australian arts community. The guest judges for the 2017 prize will be announced alongside the list of this year’s finalists in June 2017.
The KILGOUR PRIZE is an annual prize open to all citizens of Australia or residents for at least one year. Artists may enter one work only which must have been completed during the 12 months preceding 28 April 2017.
The prize culminates each year in a free public exhibition of the short-listed works of art. The KILGOUR PRIZE 2017 exhibition dates are: Saturday 5 August to Sunday 15 October 2017. A People’s Choice prize of $5,000 is also awarded each year, as determined by votes from the public during the dates of the exhibition.
Entries for the 2017 prize must be received by the Gallery by 5pm, Friday 28 April 2017. Late entries will not be accepted.

Newcastle artist Peter Gardiner was the recipient of the Kilgour Prize 2016 for his painting Origin-Landscape 2016.

About the Kilgour Prize and Jack Kilgour
Represented in the Newcastle Art Gallery collection, as well as state and national collections, Jack Noel Kilgour (1900-1987) was known for his academic modernism and subjects such as urban landscapes and figurative compositions. His contemporaries included Jean Bellette, William Dobell, Paul Haefliger and Eric Wilson. He and his wife Nancy Kilgour also established a significant artistic partnership.
In 1987, Kilgour bequeathed funds for the creation of a major figurative and portrait art competition to be run in perpetuity at Newcastle ArtGallery. As per the terms of Kilgour’s will the inaugural KILGOUR PRIZE was held in 2006. Originally held every two years and awarding $30,000, the prize has now become annual and awards a $50,000 prize. It is one of Australia’s major art prizes.
