Join visual artist Lucy Irvine in this Spatial practice and experimental weaving workshop as part of our Strung exhibition. Lucy will teach you a series of basic weaving techniques and how to use everyday materials to create site-specific woven sculptures. The aim of this workshop is to further your understanding into the potential complexities of space and expand upon spatial awareness as part of creative practice. This will include considering traces of movement, spanning and connecting space and working collaboratively on a large-scale installation.
In addition to materials provided, participants are encouraged to bring materials that they would like to experiment with or that are already of relevance to their individual practice. During the workshop you’ll have the time and unique opportunity to discuss your artwork and ideas with the Lucy.

- All the tools you need, including pencils, various types of tape, craft knifes and scissors

- Camera – a camera phone is fine!
- Sketchbook
- Lunch (there’s also plenty of places to eat near artisan)
- We’ll have plenty of materials for you to use; however, please feel free to bring along any materials you would like to experiment with. These could be multiples of small components (eg. cardboard boxes, buttons, lids), materials in lengths (eg. thread, ribbon, strips of paper or materials).
About Lucy
Lucy Irvine is a Canberra-based artist and educator whose work engages with sculptural, textile, spatial and architectural discourses. In 2010 she completed a Masters of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of Arts, and is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD at the Australian National University School of Art, where her research centres on an embodied understanding of complexity through weaving.
Lucy has exhibited across the globe, including at the 2015 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects; at the Rosny Barn as part of Dark Mofo; Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria (2013-2014); the national touring Sensorial Loop, 1st Tamworth Textile Triennial (2011-2013); Common Goods, the Commonwealth Games Festival, Melbourne Museum (2006), and the Ararat Regional Art Gallery (2012). In 2016, Irvine was selected to represent Australia at the 15th International Triennial of Tapestry, Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz, Poland.
